Reginald Bull

The Fantan ship

“What’s wrong with him, Eric? Damn! Look at the strange angle of his arm. Is it broken!”

“Calm down, Reg!” Manoli answered. “Let me do my job!”

“Will he die?”

Manoli looked up briefly. “No, Sue. Not if I can treat him immediately and without interruption.”

Sue looked at Bull, her eyes seeking help and support from him. Bull laid his arm around her thin shoulder.

“Let the doc do his work. Sid’s in the best hands.” Inside, Reginald Bull felt a mixture of anger, defiance, and fear for the young man’s life.

The Fantan crisis had begun relatively harmlessly. When these strange aliens had shown no signs of aggression, the nations of Earth had taken their fingers off the trigger again. The cylinder-shaped extraterrestrials had turned out to be curious collectors of all sorts of objects, some of them totally useless. During the confrontation on the Fantan ship, Bull did not think the two teenagers Sue and Sid would be exposed to any real danger. Especially as Sid González had a “life insurance” of sorts thanks to his powers as a teleporter. The formerly overweight boy, who had slimmed down rapidly from the exertions of his “jumps,” could have teleported out of the alien ship, the Sregar-Nakut, at any time.

Then things started to move fast, because another, larger Fantan ship had supposedly turned up and the Fantan had taken off in an emergency launch. Before Bull and the others could react to what was happening, the Sregar-Nakut had activated its energy shield.

That’s what you get for bringing children on a mission like this, you idiot, he thought to himself angrily. Obviously, sooner or later, Sid would try to play the hero. Jesus, Maria and Joseph, please let him pull through. I would never forgive myself.

Sid “Spark” González had wanted to overcome the energy shield using his teleportation skills. Bull had tried to hold him back, but how the hell do you stop a teleporter who doesn’t want to do what you say?

The floor of the storage room vibrated slightly. In the midst of hundreds of useless objects, which the Fantan referred to as Besun, there was a loud noise that sounded like the cymbals of a drum kit had fallen to the ground. Somewhere in the ship machines hummed. Giant energy generators, drive blocks, something like that.

Reginald Bull didn’t care about that. He didn’t care what star in what system the Fantan brought them to as long as the boy’s life was saved.

Damn!

“The symptoms are the same as from a strong electric shock,” Manoli, who was kneeling down beside the boy, informed him.

He did a routine check of Sid’s eyes, neck, and breathing. Then, in one firm movement, he tore Sid’s shirt open. Buttons flew off and landed on the floor.

“He’s stopped breathing and I can’t feel a pulse,” he added, while seeking a certain point on Sid’s breastbone that was hidden beneath a thick layer of black chest hair. Manoli’s voice sounded steady and under control. Not a trace of panic. “Because his limbs snapped outwards without control, his arm is broken.
